Large-scale sustainable energy generation will require far-reaching adaptations to be made to the electricity distribution system. The electricity production and distribution companies will have to deal to a greater extent than before with an energy supply that is less easy to control from (de)centralised sources, such as wind, solar and cogeneration, which are not continuous. It requires ‘intelligent networks’ to be able to match a varying supply and demand effectively so as to be able to supply consumers with a steady voltage and frequency.
The electricity supply departmentfocuses in principal on the electricity transmission systems from the European network via the Dutch 380 kV network to the small local networks and the final course to the power point. A knowledge of all of the system components – both electrical and mechanical – and their interaction with each other is necessary in order to produce a reliable power supply.
The process & energy department is currently designing new power stations that must be able to match their production more rapidly to the demand/supply variations in the network. Attention is also being given to a new propulsion system for electricity turbines that will also enable high efficiency on a smaller scale and that are suitable for use with several sustainable energy sources.
