The transition to a hydrogen economy requires major investments in production facilities and infrastructure. Added to this is the chicken-and-egg problem in relation to the use of hydrogen in transport. Supply can only be arranged where there is sufficient demand, and demand will not develop without supply. So, it would be interesting to start up production by using existing possibilities for sales, e.g. mixing it with natural gas. For the time being, hydrogen will have to be produced from fossil fuels, but the expectation is that it will soon be possible to combine this with central CO2 storage, as such increasing the sustainability of the gas mixture for the end user. There are important opportunities here for the gas distribution hub in Groningen. This is why the University of Groningen is researching the combustion properties of hydrogen, with the object of optimising the end use of the hydrogen/methane gas mixture.
